Africa-Press – Rwanda. Rwanda will from February 21-23 participate in the third window of the FIBA AfroBasket qualifiers in Rabat, Morocco, as the quest for a ticket to finals of the continental showpiece enters a decisive stage.
Cheikh Sarr’s side is pooled in Group C alongside Senegal, Cameroon and Gabon.
The team sits third in the group, having finished the second window of the qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal, with a 1-2 record where they defeated Gabon 90-63 after suffering losses at the hands of Senegal and Cameroon.
The victory kept their qualification hopes alive after they suffered a major setback after losing two consecutive games against Senegal and Cameroon.
The team has been in Morocco now for a couple of days, where they played two buildup games against the hosts in preparation for the competition.
A look at the qualification process.
With the exception of Angola, who will host the 2025 AfroBasket in August, the other 15 places are still up for grabs.
For now, Rwanda is only required to win one game to qualify, even if it loses its other two games to Senegal and Cameroon.
In the past window, Rwanda struggled to get past Senegal and Cameroon in Dakar in November, but when the chance to beat Gabon on the final day presented itself, they took it and revived their chances of qualifying.
They are now one of the three favourites to progress from Group C, since the qualifiers allow three teams to proceed out of the group.
Rwanda will face Senegal in the opening game on February 21, before taking on Cameroon at the same venue on February 22. They will wrap up their qualifying campaign against Gabon on February 23.
Group C standings
Senegal 6 points
Cameroon 5 points
Rwanda 4 points
Gabon 3 points.
