Africa-Press – Rwanda. Recently, NBA Africa CEO Clare Akamanzi revealed plans to transition the Basketball Africa League (BAL) into a franchise-based competition as part of its long-term growth strategy in Africa.
A sports franchise is a team that plays in a closed league. This means the team has a permanent place in the competition and cannot be relegated.
In this system, teams are often owned by private investors and run like businesses. This model is common in leagues like the National Basketball Association (NBA), where teams such as the Dallas Mavericks are not only sports teams but also strong global brands.

Why is franchise important?
The franchise is important because it brings stability to sport.
It gives teams financial security. Since there is no relegation, teams can plan for many years. They can invest in players, stadiums, and marketing without fear of losing their place in the league.
It also, attracts sponsors and investors, companies prefer leagues where teams are stable and well organised. This makes it easier to sign long-term deals and grow revenue.
Leagues like the NBA and the National Football League (NFL) earn billions of dollars from TV rights, sponsorships, and merchandise because they operate as strong business systems.
A franchise builds powerful brands. Teams like the Chicago Bulls are not just clubs, they are global brands that sell jerseys, content, and experiences. In addition, it connects sport with media, entertainment, and business, creating jobs and economic growth.
When do federations intervene?
Even in a franchise system, federations still play an important role. Federations are responsible for setting the rules, making sure competitions are fair, and managing national teams.
They also represent the country in international competitions under organisations like FIFA or FIBA. In many cases, federations must approve how leagues are organised, including franchise leagues.
What about Rwanda?
In Rwanda, most sports leagues still follow the traditional system with promotion and relegation. In such leagues, teams are supported by institutions and often face financial challenges.
What are biggest franchise in the world
Today, some sports franchises are worth billions of dollars. The NFL is the most profitable sports league in the world. One of its teams, the Dallas Cowboys, is often considered the most valuable sports franchise globally.
Other big franchises include the Los Angeles Lakers and the New York Yankees.
The franchise is changing how sport works around the world. It helps make leagues more stable, more attractive to investors, and more entertaining for fans.
For a country like Rwanda, understanding this model could be key to building stronger and more successful sports industries in the future.
