Yakan Guma keen to turn Gisagara VC into a regional powerhouse

Africa-Press – Rwanda. Gisagara Volleyball Club head coach Lawrence Yakan Guma is aiming to transform the club into not only the leading club in the country but also one of the top sides in the region.

Guma enjoyed a successful maiden season as Gisagara head coach as he built a strong team which went on to win the 2023 Rwanda Volleyball league title, beating the likes of APR and Police to the silverware.

But there is no stopping for the tactician who insists that he is eager for more silverware with the Southern Province-based powerhouse before setting sights on dominating the region and Africa at large.

“We want to win every tournament that we compete in this season, we have the strength and I believe we have the best team. My ultimate goal is to turn this club into a regional powerhouse and build a strong team that can compete against the best in Africa,” Yakan told Times Sport.

“We are more than willing to transform this club into a dominant force in Rwandan volleyball and in any competition, we compete in. The players we sign must also fit into the long-term project. I’m very determined to improve,” he added

Guma took charge of Gisagara VC in March, just two months after retiring from playing volleyball alongside some of his former national teammates including Vincent Dusabimana, Flavien Ndamukunda and Emile Karera.

Eyes on Taxpayers’ tourney, Zone V

After lifting the league title, Gisagara VC now turn their focus on winning the Taxpayers Tournament which will be staged over a weekend at BK Arena before representing Rwanda at the Zone V Volleyball championship that will take place in Kigali.

The regional tournament will bring together teams from Zone V consisting of 12 countries namely Burundi, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and hosts Rwanda.
