After winning their opening game against Tanzania’s JKT Stars, Rwanda Energy Group (REG) women head coach Esperance Mukaneza is confident her ladies can maintain their perfect start to the 2023 FIBA Zone V women’s championship ahead of Monday night’s ‘must-win’ game against South Sudanese side Nile Legends.

REG started the competition brightly thanks to Saturday night’s 89-38 win over JKT Stars in Group B and Mukaneza pointed at the importance of consistency for her side to stand a chance to win the competition which is underway at Lycée de Kigali gymnasium.

“We started well by winning our first game, but we must win game two to boost our hopes and increase the chances of progressing to the quarter finals. Players are fit and ready for the challenge,” Mukaneza said.

The 2023 FIBA Zone V women’s championship has attracted nine teams from six countries. It acts as a qualifier for the continental women’s basketball championship that will take place next year.

Meanwhile, another Rwandan team APR also started their campaign well with an 86-68 victory over Burundian Gladiators in Group A on Sunday, October 29.

Competition System

Clubs are pooled in two groups. Group A has four teams, while B has five teams. The teams in each group will play between themselves, and the top four will proceed to the quarterfinals.

Four winners of quarterfinal games will advance to the semifinals where the winners will advance to the final to battle for the trophy, while the losers will play a third-place game.

The champions, the first and second runners-up will book tickets for the 2023 FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women which will take place in Egypt from December 8-17.
