Africa-Press – Senegal. La réalisatrice sénégalaise Mame Woury Thioubou a remporté jeudi le Grand prix international Urti du documentaire d’auteur de Yaoundé pour son film intitulé ‘’Rebeuss, Chambre 11’’.

Le film a également a été également récompensé du Prix des œuvres numériques de la 42e édition de la conférence Urti clôturée jeudi dans la capitale camerounaise.

« In Yaoundé, Cameroon with two prizes won. I am happy to share with you these new distinctions for +Rebeuss, Chambre 11+ », reacted the director on her Facebook page.

Mame Woury Thioubou’s documentary film was distinguished among the ten finalist films coming from Italy, France, South Korea, Morocco, Sri Lanka, Burundi and Ukraine.

« I feel great satisfaction given the members of the jury coming from different backgrounds. That means a lot. At the same time, I am overcome by sadness when thinking of these two deaths” which inspired the film, explained the director during a telephone interview.

From Brazzaville where she is participating in a film workshop, Mame Woury Thioubou reveals that she dedicated these prizes to those who agreed to participate in the film and to the two young people who died in detention.

« I thank once again the film team, the people who participated in this adventure with me. I have a thought for all those behind bars,” she continues.

« Rebeuss, Chambre 11 », a 49-minute film produced in 2022, combines documentary and animation to question the Senegalese prison system.

It is inspired by the story of Cheikh Ndiaye, aged 18, and Babacar Mané, 19, who died on the night of Tuesday August 27, 2019 at the Rebeuss central prison, in Dakar.

« Sheikh and Babacar are dead, but thousands of their fellow citizens continue to serve their sentences in undignified conditions, » said the director.

The journalist, head of the Culture Desk of the newspaper Le Quotidien, offers through this film a reflection on the Senegalese prison system.

« The time has come to reflect deeply on the Senegalese prison system. Since independence, we have built only one new prison in Sébikotane. Most of the remand centers are in ruins. It is necessary to decongest our prisons and better respect for human rights, » she pleaded.

The ceremony of the « Urti International Grand Prix for author’s documentary » announced the results on Thursday as part of the 42nd edition of the URTI 2023 conference in Yaoundé

« Created in 1949, under the aegis of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), URTI is the oldest audiovisual organization and the only one with a completely international vocation », argues an information note.
