Africa-Press – Senegal. Actors of urban cultures in the regions of Tambacounda and Kédougou received grants on Friday for a total amount of nineteen million four hundred thousand francs, under the funding allocated by the development of urban cultures (FDCU).

The thirteen beneficiaries received their check during a ceremony chaired by the Minister of Culture and Historical Heritage, Aliou Sow.

The total amount intended for the beneficiaries of these two regions is 38 million CFA francs, he said, the remainder to be given to them after the filing of the activity reports of each beneficiary.

The Urban Cultures Development Fund aims to contribute « to solving problems related to the employment of young people, in this case those who are active in the urban culture sector », explained the Minister of Culture.

The FDCU « is part of a global cultural policy of the Head of State favorable to the structuring of the sub-sector » and as such aims « the structuring, training, events, production, creation, dissemination , exchange and mobility,” he said.

“Strangely, he notes, among all of these possibilities, it is events and mobility that are most used by” cultural actors, underlined Aliou Sow, before launching to the latter: “ Think about structuring, think about training,” advised Aliou Sow.

Between its establishment in 2017 and 2022, the FDCU has made it possible to finance 696 projects out of 1,393 requests, i.e. an average of 116 projects per year, and over this period, the number of projects has grown « by at least 33% every year,” said Aliou Sow.

The detailed analysis of the number of projects received shows that they increased by 101 projects received between 2019 and 2020, 143 between 2020 and 2021, against more than 190 projects received between 2021 and 2022. Figures which, we note -il, “testifies to the dynamism of the players in the urban culture sub-sector”.

The results and entrepreneurial performance of the entities of urban cultures are symbolized by the Houses of Urban Cultures installed in the regions of Dakar, Matam, Tambacounda, pending those planned in Kaolack and Diourbel, underlines the Minister.

There is also an urban culture television and radio station produced by the “Diom Nanor” structure, as well as “several recording studios” set up in Tambacounda and Kédougou.

Similarly, the many festivals launched in the area, « have been able to prove that the authorities were right to trust your sub-sector », added Aliou Sow to the actors of urban cultures.

Speaking of the « slicing up of funding and the obstacles » that this process entails, he announced a reform of the system for granting FDCU grants, in order to allow actors to benefit more from this funding.
