The World Bank declares that it has approved two financings for a total amount of 285 million US dollars, approximately 171.2 billion CFA francs, intended for the prevention of floods in Senegal and the adaptation of higher education in the country to the needs of employers.
According to a press release received from his office in Dakar, an initial financing of 135 million US dollars – approximately 81.1 billion CFA francs, according to the current rate of the US dollar – was approved on Thursday June 29 to “reduce the risk of ‘flooding in the peri-urban areas of Dakar ».
The funds made available to Senegal will be used to « anticipate [the risks of flooding], thanks to the strengthening of planning and urban management capacities ».
The financing of 81.1 billion CFA francs is the second granted by the World Bank to the Rainwater Management and Climate Change Adaptation Project 2 (PROGEP 2).
« The initial financing of PROGEP 2 has already enabled the construction of more than 14 kilometers of primary and secondary canals, which protect 55,000 people and 345 hectares from flooding », explains the press release from the financial institution.
« In the wake of these positive results, we are confident that this additional funding can provide structural solutions to mitigate the impact of heavy rains in priority urban areas identified by the government, » said the Director of Operations in the press release. of the World Bank for Senegal, Keiko Miwa.
Initially scheduled for 2026, the closure of the project will be postponed to July 2029, according to the same source.
The World Bank says in a separate statement that it has approved funding of US$150 million – around 90.1 billion CFA francs – for Senegal, with the aim of “improving the capacity of higher education institutions”. .
This funding will enable Senegal to “adapt the skills taught to the needs of the labor market”.
This funding approved Thursday, June 29 « comes with a grant of US$1.9 million (1.5 billion CFA francs) from the Partnership for Early Childhood Education’s multi-donor trust fund’ ‘.
« This support is part of the Professional Higher Education Project oriented towards the integration and success of young people.

‘’Nous sommes confiants quant à l’atteinte des objectifs de ce projet s’inspirant des résultats déjà satisfaisants de l’institut supérieur d’études professionnels (ISEP) de Thiès (ouest), financé par la Banque mondiale’’, ajoute la même source.
Elle précise que le financement destiné à l’enseignement supérieur sénégalais va lui permettre de construire huit autres ISEP.
Les compétences professionnelles adéquates et pertinentes qu’offrent les ISEP vont favoriser une intégration rapide des bénéficiaires au marché du travail, assure l’institution financière.
‘’Ce projet devrait avoir un impact positif avec, à court terme, l’inscription de plus de 16.000 étudiants en tant que premières cohortes dans les ISEP nouvellement créés’’, a dit dans le communiqué la directrice des opérations de la Banque mondiale pour le Sénégal.
Les huit futurs ISEP ‘’seront construits dans des régions aux profils différents, selon les besoins socioéconomiques’’.
