SENEGAL-POLITICS-JUSTICE-SANTE / Fund against Covid-19: the YAW group wants to set up a high court of justice

Africa-Press – Senegal.

YAW MPs pledged to spearhead this initiative even though others of this nature have come to nothing, they say, because of their colleagues from Benno Bokk Yaakaar.

“The Yewwi Askan Wi parliamentary group had asked, following the report of the Court of Auditors on [the funds intended for the fight against] the Covid-19 pandemic, that the National Assembly bring itself up to standard. In other words, that it set up a high court of justice,” recalled Ababacar Mbaye during a press conference.

« There was a request for a commission of inquiry filed by the Honorable Cheikh Abdou Mbacké, which related to the 200 billion CFA francs resulting from the execution of the missions of the CREI (Court of Repression of the Enrichment illicit) […] It is important that we know today if this amount has been recovered and where it is,” said Mr. Mbaye.

He recalls that his colleague Mamadou Lamine Diallo also filed a request for a parliamentary commission of inquiry on fishing based on a book by journalist Cheikh Yérim Seck.

The latter “reported a scandal, an approach to circumvent fishing licenses. Those who have read the book note that boats no longer need fishing licenses [to] plunder our waters […] They have access to species prohibited by fishing licenses,” Ababacar Mbaye argued.

« Unfortunately, he said sorry, the National Assembly will not have the opportunity to know the truth about these fishing licenses and these boats flying the Senegalese flag, because the mechanical majority of Benno Bokk Yaakaar considers, by vote , that we can’t go far on this.

The YAW MP-elect maintains that « all opposition bills have been rejected », as well as « all his requests for the creation of parliamentary inquiry commissions ».

« We can therefore consider that it is really our mission to control government action that is blocked. The National Assembly will have to content itself with oral or written questions » because of such blockage, he continued.
