Africa-Press – Senegal. An extraordinary meeting of the conference of heads of state and government of UEMOA, devoted to the political situation in Niger, will be held on Sunday in Abuja, the federal capital of Nigeria, learned the APS from official sources, in Dakar.
This meeting will be followed by a special meeting of ECOWAS leaders on the same subject, according to the same sources.
The leaders of the member countries of WAEMU, the West African Economic and Monetary Union, will decide on the situation in Niger, one of the states of this organization, which is currently facing a political crisis.
The army overthrew the government of the democratically elected president of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum.
On Friday, the head of the Nigerien presidential guard, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, presented himself, during a speech delivered on Niger’s public television, as the president of the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Fatherland, set up by the military to run the country.
This announcement records the overthrow of the constitutional order and the establishment of a military regime.
Accustomed to coups, Niger succeeded in a democratic transition in 2021, with the coming to power of the former minister and ex-MP Mohamed Bazoum, today in the hands of the army.
The overthrow of the constitutional order provoked a wave of denunciations, particularly within international institutions.
On Wednesday, the day of the putsch, ECOWAS condemned « in the strongest possible terms this attempt to seize power by force » and called on the perpetrators of the putsch to release « immediately and unconditionally » Mohamed Bazoum.
The United States of America also condemned the coup.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken assured Mr. Bazoum of Washington’s unwavering support.
The African Union, the United Nations and the European Union have done the same. Russian diplomacy did not fail to demand the release of the Nigerien president by the military.
