Daily newspapers predict the 'implosion' of BBY after the nomination of its candidate for the presidential election

Africa-Press – Senegal. The Benno Bokk Yaakaar (BBY) coalition will face an « implosion » when its leader, Macky Sall, chooses his candidate for the presidential election of February 25, 2024 among the many contenders , says a good part of the press this Friday.

« More than five months at the head of the country, Macky Sall […] is no longer seen as this constant by which destiny was tied in the presidential space », comments Kritik’, according to which the leader of BBY is « challenged by his lieutenants and [is] back against the wall for the imminent choice of a candidate ».

In Benno Bokk Yaakaar, « we are far from the time of absolute loyalty », continues the same newspaper, evoking the possibility of an « implosion of the APR (the political party of Macky Sall) and of Benno Bokk Yaakaar », once the candidate of the presidential majority has been designated.

« We are leaving the ship as [we did with] Abdou Diouf in 2000 and Abdoulaye Wade in 2012 », observes Bés Bi Le Jour speaking of the « departures » of certain allies of Macky Sall.

He talks about the case of Youssou Ndour, whose political movement, Fekke Ma Ci Boole, announced that he had resigned from Benno Bokk Yaakaar. The musical artist also resigned from his position as minister, advisor to the President of the Republic, according to the political structure he leads.

“The negotiations and heartbreaks are raging [and] some of his relatives have already paved their way,” adds Bés Bi Le Jour, believing that these are “the beginnings of the implosion” of BBY.

« If there are signs of rebellion in his camp, those in charge who are dragging around do not dare challenge the leader’s choice, » comments Tribune.

The newspaper recalls that the report of the Court of Auditors implicating civil servants and political leaders of BBY involved in the alleged embezzlement of money intended for the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic « is not […] dismissed, even if it has not yet given rise to legal proceedings.

EnQuête announces that Macky Sall summoned the leaders of Benno Bokk Yaakaar to the Palace of the Republic this Saturday with a view to nominating the presidential majority candidate.

« Did Macky Sall not take long to reveal the name of the lucky one? We have been witnessing a real trench war for several weeks, and it will be difficult for some to get behind a candidate, » if they happen to not have been chosen, we read in EnQuête.

L’Observateur announces « political meetings » which will be held « before and after » the « proclamation of the choice » of the leader of the presidential majority.

This will be an « opportunity for Macky Sall to explain the reasons for his choice and to raise awareness [political leaders] of the need to remain united, to stay in power », we read in the same newspaper.

« A great political and administrative experience »

« The head of Benno Bokk Yaakaar will have to use pedagogy to dissuade certain candidates for candidacy, who are determined to override his choice. Some are determined to [covet] the votes of the Senegalese, against all odds,” writes WalfQuotidien.

The same newspaper smells « an air of revolt in the camp of the presidential majority ».

Sud Quotidien, regarding the collection of sponsorships from candidates, discusses the difficulty that the latter will have in avoiding duplicates likely to compromise their candidacy.

On September 27, the candidates for the presidential election will begin sponsorship collection operations, which « promises to be a life-size test due to the latest innovations made » to the electoral system, underlines Sud Quotidien.

Le Soleil took an interest in female candidates for the presidential election. Former Prime Minister Aminata Touré, former ministers Aminata Assome Diatta and Aïda Mbodj, businesswoman Anta Babacar Ngom and doctor Rose Wardini want to covet the votes in 2024, according to the newspaper.

« These candidates […] have, for the most part, extensive political and administrative experience. This is the case of Aminata Touré, whose political trajectory is supported by solid intellectual skills. Aïda Mbodj, for her part, has faded under the harness, in addition to her ministerial responsibilities, » analyzes historian Penda Mbow.

« Aminata Assome Diatta presents, for her part, a very structured speech. She has proven political experience, » Mbow told the newspaper Le Soleil.
