Africa-Press – Senegal. The President of the Republic, Macky Sall, reiterated Thursday in Touba (center), before the Caliph General of the Mourides, Serigne Mountakha Bassirou Mbacké, his decision not to run in the presidential election from February 25, 2024.
« I would like to reiterate before you my commitment not to run for the presidential election on February 25th. This is a commitment that I had made since my campaign for the last presidential election, » said the head of state.
Macky Sall spoke on the sidelines of his traditional courtesy visit to the Caliph General of the Mourides as a prelude to the Magal.
« Next year, at this time, another President of the Republic will be there to make the ziarr (courtesy visit) and deliver the nation’s message, » he added.
Macky Sall believes that « this new era which will open », that of his replacement as President of the Republic, « will not take away anything from the relations » that he maintains with the Caliph General of the Mourides and the town of Touba.
A major religious event commemorating the departure into exile in Gabon (1895-1902) of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba (1853-1927), the 129th edition of Magal will be celebrated in Touba, Monday September 4.
