Africa-Press – Senegal. The opponent Ousmane Sonko was admitted Thursday morning to the intensive care unit of the Principal Hospital in Dakar, a prison administration official confirmed to APS.
« It was around 4 am that he was admitted » to the said service, said the same source, on condition of anonymity, confirming information from the opponent’s lawyers.
« He is weak because he has not eaten since his arrest and incarceration in Sébikhotane prison. On the other hand, he accepts medical care when he is weak, » he said.
“He keeps his lucidity,” continued the same source.
Ousmane Sonko, mayor of Ziguinchor (south) and former deputy, was arrested on July 28.
Three days later, he was charged with calling for insurrection, criminal association, undermining state security, and conspiracy against state authority.
On the day of his indictment, the Minister of the Interior, Antoine Diome, announced the dissolution of his party, Pastef-Les patriotes.
« Pastef, through its leaders and its authorities, has frequently called its supporters to insurrectionary movements », argued Mr. Diome, which the leaders of the said political party and its activists continue to deny.
Mr Sonko is ranked third in the 2019 presidential election, behind former Prime Minister Idrissa Seck and Macky Sall, who won re-election.
