Africa-Press – Senegal. Les participants à la Conférence de Banjul sur les changements anticonstitutionnels de gouvernement ont appelé jeudi la CEDEAO à veiller à ce que les droits des citoyens soient préservés des effets négatifs des sanctions contre les auteurs de coups d’État militaires.

This appeal is part of a list of recommendations contained in the final communiqué of the meeting which began on Monday at the Dauda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Center in Banjul.

The participants in the conference organized by the ECOWAS Court of Justice thus underlined the need for the community organization to evaluate the effectiveness of the sanctions and to set up a guide for their implementation.

At the same time, ECOWAS is called upon to notably amend its protocol on democracy and good governance by including the concept of broader participation and a new approach to good governance based on human rights and popular control.

The Banjul Conference at the same time resulted in a call for community organization to adopt a rapid and effective means of tackling the « root causes » of crises and conflicts linked to poor socio-economic conditions. Member States and the poor living conditions of citizens.

The participants pleaded for a strengthening of the institutions of ECOWAS and in particular its Court of Justice in its role of surveillance of the community space, in order to allow it, possibly by means of an amendment, to be able to be seized of questions elections.
