The Ambassador of Gabon discusses the challenges of the general elections of August 26

Africa-Press – Senegal. The main issue of the August 26 general elections in Gabon lies in the choice given to citizens to freely choose their President of the Republic, deputies, and mayors in a peaceful and inclusive electoral process, said Gabon’s ambassador to Senegal, Régis Onanga Ndiaye.

« The main issue is the democratic choice given to Gabonese citizens to freely choose their President of the Republic, as well as deputies and mayors in a peaceful, inclusive and credible electoral process, for 19 candidates running for the presidential election, including the outgoing president, Ali Bongo Ondimba, » the diplomat said in an interview published Thursday by Le Soleil.

He explained that this was underpinned by a « republican social pact ».

» It is a solidarity pact that strengthens the ties between all Gabonese men and women, our national unity, at the same time as a leadership pact that reiterates our ambition to be a pioneer and exemplary country in the concert of nations. « , explained the Gabonese ambassador.

Régis Onanga Ndiaye thus mentioned the implementation through general elections of consensual decisions resulting from the political consultations of February 2023.

They aimed, « to re-establish the uninominal first-past-the-post ballot for the presidential, legislative and municipal elections and to make the electoral calendar of all these ballots coincide, then reducing the duration of the presidential mandate from seven to five years.

“The last issue, the most important from my point of view, is the preservation of peace, stability and security,” he said.
