Africa-Press – Senegal. The Head of State, Macky Sall, on Thursday urged religious authorities to become more involved in resolving the socio-political tensions which are agitating the sub-region, notably linked to the dispute between ECOWAS and the military authorities of Niger.
The new Nigerien authorities are supported by those of Burkina Faso and Mali, opposed to any military intervention by the community organization’s troops to restore constitutional order in Niamey, after the overthrow of President Bazoum.
While saying it favored the peaceful route, ECOWAS announced that it intended to send a “standby force” to restore constitutional order in Niger if President Mohamed Bazoum was not restored to power.
Faced with this threat, Burkina Faso and Mali decided to support the coup d’état in Niger, warning that a « military intervention » to restore the ousted president « would amount to a declaration of war » against their two countries.
Faced with this risk of escalation and other tensions in the sub-region, the Head of State calls for the involvement of religious authorities in order to preach the good word.
“Faced with the multiple tensions recorded in the sub-region, I think that religious authorities must speak out to invite the parties concerned to a return to orthodoxy for an Africa of peace and development,” he declared. before the Caliph General of the Mourides, Serigne Mountakha Bassirou Mbacké.
Having come to pay the latter a courtesy visit a few days before the Grand Magal of Touba, scheduled for Monday, the Head of State reiterated his firm desire to preserve peace in Senegal.
“As I have said in the past, as long as I am at the head of the country, I will spare no effort to guarantee peace and stability,” he assured.
Arrived in Touba around 6 p.m., President Sall spoke with the Patriarch of Darou Miname for about thirty minutes.
Accompanied in particular by the First Lady Marème Faye, he was welcomed by the Minister of the Interior Antoine Abdoulaye Félix Diome, who was accompanied by the governor of Diourbel, Ibrahima Fall, and the administrative and religious authorities of the region.
The spokesman of the Caliph General of the Mourides, Serigne Bassirou Mbacké Abdou Khadre Mbacké declined the message of the Caliph General before the Head of State Macky Sall.
He took advantage of this visit to magnify the projects carried out by the Caliph General of the Mourides, in particular the Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba University of Touba.
The Head of State also recalled the important achievements of his government in the holy city, citing in particular the Ila Touba highway, the Cheikhoul Khadim hospital, sanitation works and urban roads.
