Africa-Press – Senegal. Senegal has become the first African nation to win five Confederation of African Football (CAF) competitions in a row in less than two years, after its historic title in the African Cup of Nations. under-17 nations.
On February 6, 2022, the Senegalese football team won its first African Cup of Nations, after winning the final at the end of the penalty shootout (4-2) against Egypt, the Africa’s most successful team with seven trophies.
A grail that arrives after 61 years of scarcity for sixteen participations in the competition including two finals lost in 2002 against Cameroon and in 2019 against Algeria.
A historic victory which will inaugurate a new era for Senegal in the competitions organized by the body of African football.
When it comes to hoisting the country’s flag on the first step of the podium, the Senegal beach soccer team always responds.
Eight months after the senior CAN won, the Beach Soccer Lions will raise, in October 2022 in Mozambique, their seventh African Cup of the discipline (2008, 2011, 2013, 2016,2018, 2021, 2023), including the fourth successive face, again to Egypt.
It was the second title of African champion in a row during the year 2022.
Senegal will even afford the luxury of winning a third title in a row, just before the anniversary of Team A’s first coronation. On February 5, 2023, the local Lions will win the African Nations Championship (CHAN ) 2023 on Algerian soil.
A first trophy won against the host country.
Less than two months after the historic coronation in CHAN, the national under-20 team taking part in the category CAN (February 19-March 11) could only ride this victorious wave.
In a West African derby the players of Malick Daf won by 2 goals to 0 against Gambia in the final. Yet another first Senegal title in another category.
With four trophies won in a row, Senegal had already become the first African nation to win four competitions in a row organized by CAF.
On May 19, 2023, the Cubs U17 once again filled the country’s trophy cabinet with a fifth coronation in all categories.
Individual awards
In all these aforementioned coronations, it is clear that the first bulwark of the teams played an obvious role since Senegal has always finished with the title of best goalkeeper in the various competitions.
These are the CAN senior with Édouard Mendy, the CAN Beach soccer with Al Seyni Ndiaye, the CHAN with Papa Mamadou Sy, the CAN U20 with Landing Badji and the CAN U17 with Serigne Diouf.
Four of the five trophies have been won against North African countries, long executioners of Senegalese football in the past.
Egypt in CAN senior and in Beach Soccer, Algeria with CHAN and Morocco in CAN U17.
The Lions also won the trophies for best players at CAN senior (Sadio Mané), at CAN beach soccer (Seydina Mandione Laye Diagne) and at CAN U20 (Lamine Camara).
At CAN Beach soccer, CAN U20 and CAN U17, Senegal distinguished itself with the title of top scorer. They are respectively Seydina Mandione Laye Diagne (10 goals), Pape Demba Diop (5 goals) and Amara Diouf (5 goals).
Senegal had won the first edition of the African Championship for the deaf, beating Mali in the final by 1 goal to 0, on September 25, 2021, in Kenya.
