SENEGAL-FOOTBALL-VIOLENCE / A referee calls on the players to show more "fair play"

Africa-Press – Senegal. The president of the central committee of referees (CCA) of the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF), Malang Diédhiou, called on football players to show « more understanding and fair- play” towards the referees.

« We ask for more understanding from football players, to be fair play and to know that football is there to bring people together and not to divide them, » he said in an interview with APS.

Mr. Diédhiou made this appeal following the violence that took place last Sunday during the match of the 22nd day of Ligue 1 football, between AS Pikine and Jaraaf, following an arbitration decision.

At the end of May, scenes of violence also punctuated the semi-final of the Coupe de la Ligue between Ndiambour de Louga and Stade de Mbour. Similar scenes had been noted a month earlier, in April, between AS Pikine and Dakar Sacré-Coeur, as part of the knockout stages of the Senegal Cup.

According to Malang Diédhiou, the referee operating in the field can only judge according to « a perception », which may not correspond to « the reality of things ». « Reality is when you have the image, » he said.

On the field, the referee “has the perception of having seen something, and sometimes that’s why we see a referee whistle for a penalty when the ball hits a player’s chest. He knows that part of the body can’t be a fault, but the perception he had is that the ball hit the hand,” explained the Senegalese whistle.

He assured that at his level, the central committee takes care to suspend the referees when they make mistakes in making decisions that impact the result of a match.
