Seychelles Joins 2nd Africa-Caribbean CARICOM Summit

Africa-Press – Seychelles. President Wavel Ramkalawan was represented at the 2nd Africa-Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Summit by Ambassador Conrad Mederic, Permanent Representative of Seychelles to the African Union, which took place on 7th September 2025 at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa.

The Summit was held under the theme “Transcontinental Partnership in Pursuit of Reparatory Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations” and was organised in line with the commitments made by the Prime Ministers of Ethiopia and Barbados respectively, in the margins of the 38th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly in February 2025. To recall, the first Africa-CARICOM Summit was hosted by Kenya virtually on the 7th of September 2021.

The 2nd Africa-CARICOM Summit aimed to reinforce people-to-people bonds, foster deeper interregional economic cooperation between the two regions, and strengthen the spirit of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the African Union and the Caribbean Community on Upscaling Engagement and Linkages with People of African Descent, signed on 26 September 2024.

In his intervention during Plenary Session 2 on the theme: “Forging Stronger Relations Between Africa and the Caribbean Region”, Ambassador Mederic highlighted the many similarities between Seychelles as a Small Island Developing State and the Caribbean Community including our rich creole cultural heritage and our boundless ocean wealth. He called for more cooperation between the African Continent and the Caribbean Region, by promoting platforms for exchanges in music, dance, and other shared traditions that resonate with our people, thereby fostering stronger people-to-people connections. He further called on the need for the two to be more politically influential by uniting forces in advocating for Climate Change causes, inadequate fair financing, and the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index in multinational gatherings.

Ambassador Mederic was accompanied to the Summit by Honourable Clifford Andre, Member of Parliament of the Republic of Seychelles and Second Secretary Patricia Ilunga from the Embassy of Seychelles in Addis Ababa.
