Africa-Press – Seychelles. The Seychelles National Institute for Culture, Heritage and the Arts is currently organizing the third edition of the Indian Ocean Cinema Workshop from October 17 to 28, 2022.

This workshop, which brings together some art teachers, employees of the Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation and local film producers, is led by Professor Dr. Didier Mauro at the SBC training room in Hermitage.

Ms. Miera Savy, representative of the Institute explained that it was in 2018 that the department of culture at the time had taken the initiative to create the Indian Ocean Cinema Workshop and this year, after the pandemic , the third edition is organized.

“The main objectives of this workshop are to democratize training in audiovisual practices, to promote artistic creation, to allow those who already have knowledge or practice of audiovisual to improve and to give those who already have knowledge or practice of audiovisual to improve and to give those who have not had the opportunity to do so, to obtain initial quality training”, underlined Mrs. Savy.

Ms. Savy added that with this workshop and the rising use of the internet, the Seychelles National Institute for Culture, Heritage and the Arts wants to contribute to contemporary expressions and the quality of archives to be passed on to future generations. “Our action also aims to meet the expectations of the populations of all our sister islands and to shine in the Indian Ocean region. Dr. Didier Mauro, as the main volunteer teacher facilitating this workshop, created this educational material for our institute to contribute to a free international sharing of knowledge”.

The trainer, Dr. Didier Mauro has been a filmmaker since 1979 and a sociologist of culture. His cinematographic work, largely focused on the international scene, has led him to film the realities of Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Indian Ocean.

He teaches regularly at the I.N.A (the National Audiovisual Institute, in France) in several universities. He created in 2012 for the Ligue de l’Enseignement de Guadeloupe, the Atelier de Cinéma des Antilles, twinned with the association Vues d’Afrique organized in association with the FEMI film festival, renewed each year, which welcomes trainees from Guadeloupe and Martinique.

In the field of solidarity, he oversees development actions on an international scale, and has devoted two decades of commitment to Madagascar, in the fields of education for all and culture.

At the end of this two-week training, participants will have a certificate and the material used will be translated and put online with free access.
