Africa-Press – Seychelles. Prince William says that Africa has “always had a special place” in his heart ahead of his visit to Cape Town for his fourth annual Earthshot Prize on 6 November.
The Prince of Wales will arrive in SA on 4 November as Earthshot Week begins in Cape Town.
“The Earthshot Prize was launched by Prince William in 2020 to search for and scale the most innovative solutions to the world’s greatest environmental challenges,” says the initiative’s website.
The five winners of the prize will be given one million pounds each.
From 4 to 7 November, Earthshot Week will see the prince engage in events focusing on sustainability. He will also spend time with local communities and hear about issues which are important to them.
Prince William says he found comfort in Africa as a teenager; this is also where he proposed to Kate Middleton and found inspiration for the Earthshot Prize.
“It was in Namibia in 2018 that I realised the power of how innovative, positive solutions to environmental problems could drive transformative change for humans and nature,” the prince shares in a statement.
“I am proud that since its inception, the Earthshot Prize has travelled to Europe, North America and Asia, spotlighting and scaling 45 groundbreaking solutions, all of which are having a tangible impact as we work as a global collective to secure the future of our planet,” he continues.
He says:
Prince William hopes that by the end of the week, the Earthshot Prize will have provided a platform for innovators “bringing about change for their communities”.
“I firmly believe that if we come together with collective ambition and urgency, we can reshape the future of our planet,” he adds.
The prince previously expressed his excitement about coming to SA in a video.
“Looking forward to seeing you in South Africa,” he said.
“I know you’re as passionate as I am about making a difference to our planet, and we can’t wait to share [the finalists’] stories with you,” he said.
The Earthshot Prize has previously been held in Singapore (2023), Boston (2022) and London (2021).
The show will be broadcast in 50 countries across Africa via MultiChoice, in the UK on BBC iPlayer, and worldwide on YouTube.
The event will open with a performance from Lebo M. Ebuka Obi-Uchendu and Moozlie will host the first-ever live-streamed green carpet pre-show for the Earthshot Prize.
More than 1000 members of the public have been invited to the event.
The awards show will take place in The Earthshot Prize Dome, next to the Cape Town Stadium. The environmentally sustainable structure, the biggest of its kind in Africa, has been used previously and will be used for future events in the country.
An Earthshot Prize press release said the production of the event has created approximately 650 local jobs.
To celebrate Earthshot Week taking place in SA, Table Mountain and other Cape Town landmarks will be lit green from 4 to 7 November.
