Africa-Press – Seychelles. Authorities provide clarity on M5 aquaculture zone amid public concerns
Authorities have come forward to clarify the designation of the M5 Aquaculture Development Zone off the coast of Beau Vallon, following concerns from tourism operators, fishers, and environmental advocates.
The 15-square-kilometre site, officially gazetted on December 31, 2024, has drawn criticism from local stakeholders over its location, and potential impact on marine life and their livelihoods. However, the Seychelles Fisheries Authority (SFA) said the zone is part of a broader national plan to develop the aquaculture sector in a controlled, and sustainable manner. Aubrey Lesperance, deputy chief executive of the SFA, explained in a press conference held last week that the M5 site is not tied to a specific SFA project, but rather forms part of a larger aquaculture zoning plan.
