Africa-Press – Seychelles. President Wavel Ramkalawan chaired a scheduled meeting of the Cabinet yesterday, Wednesday 10th August at which a number of policy and legal memoranda were considered.
Cabinet approved a concession equivalent to 25% of Excise Tax applicable on fuel used by cargo vessels operating a scheduled cargo service between Mahe, Praslin and La Digue. This measure will help reduce the cost of living on the islands. The Department of Trade will monitor the implementation to ensure that the benefit of the fuel concession is passed on to customers.
Cabinet approved further amendments to the Prevention of Terrorism Act, and accompanying Regulations following amendments made in 2021. The new amendments are being effected following review by the Eastern and Southern African Anti-Money Laundering Group (ESAAMLG).
Cabinet discussed public concerns about the provision of services within the construction industry. In an effort to continue to raise standards and improve the ease of doing business, Cabinet approved the Construction Professionals Registration Bill, 2022. The aim of the Bill is to establish the Seychelles Council of Registered Professionals in Construction which will regulate the practice of professionals within the construction industry.
Cabinet was briefed on the performance of the SEYPEC tankers for the period 2002 to 2021. Following this presentation to Cabinet, SEYPEC will make a presentation to the National Assembly to clarify the status of the tanker performance and to explain the plan for the future.
Cabinet was briefed on the main activities of the Social Affairs Department for 2021 and the first quarter of 2022. The presentation highlighted the key statistics related to intervention work undertaken with the individuals, families and children. Cabinet raised concerns about the abuse cases in communities. Cabinet noted the challenges in the community and commended the Social Affairs Department for their commitment and hard work.
Cabinet took note that the Police have intensified anti-narcotics operations targeting hotspots and people of interest to the Police. Numerous operations have been conducted in the last week. The Police force is being assisted by the military and the operation is being conducted with the utmost respect for human rights and property. The President and the Cabinet thanked the people for their cooperation and for assisting the police in its quest to remove the scourge of drugs in the country. Members of the community are encouraged to continue to give any information to the Office of the Commissioner of Police.
