Africa-Press – Seychelles. China announced that its trade with Africa reached a record level in the first half of 2026, attributing this growth to its policy of imposing zero tariffs on all African countries that have diplomatic relations with Beijing.
A spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry, Lin Jian, stated at a regular press conference that the volume of bilateral trade amounted to 1.41 trillion yuan (196.6 billion dollars) in the first six months of the year, marking a record for this period. In response to a question regarding China’s policy on tariff elimination, he noted that “the total trade volume has grown faster, and it is expected to reach an even higher level by the end of this year.”
Lin pointed out that capital goods and intermediate goods account for about 75% of China’s exports to Africa, and that these shipments support manufacturing and agricultural modernization on the continent rather than merely meeting consumer demand.
Lin also rejected criticisms regarding trade imbalances, stating that such narratives “are merely traps designed by those with hidden motives aimed at disrupting the friendly cooperation between China and Africa.” He emphasized that China remains committed to expanding openness at the highest levels despite global challenges, including regional conflicts and the rise of unilateralism and protectionism.
He added that China will work to further facilitate bilateral trade, expand access to markets for more high-quality African products, and inject new momentum into what Beijing describes as a “cohesive China-Africa community in all circumstances with a shared future in the new era.”
These statements come at a time when competition between China and the West for influence in Africa is escalating, as Beijing seeks to strengthen its position as a key trading partner for the continent.
