Africa-Press – Seychelles. Brigadier General Laurent Cluzel, Superior Commander of the Armed Forces in the Southern Zone of the Indian Ocean (COMSUP FAZSOI) yesterday paid a courtesy visit to the President of the Republic of Seychelles Wavel Ramkalawan at the State House. He was accompanied by the Ambassador of France to Seychelles, Ms. Olivia Berkeley-Christmann.
“We were invited to participate in your National Day and we had the honor of seeing one of our parachute detachments parade with your troops yesterday (Thursday) and it was a great honor. With the President of the Republic, who received us with great honor and warmth, we discussed our areas of cooperation, our way of working together with the Seychellois forces,” added Brigadier General Laurent Cluzel.
The senior commander explains that they have several lines of work between different units but work a lot with the Seychelles coast guard. “Together we are learning to be able to act collectively, this is called interoperability. We have many training and mutual exchange sessions. We meet for exercises such as Cateaux Noirs. The fight against drug trafficking is one of our operational axes. We recently achieved great success together – the seizure of over a ton of drugs with the Champlain boat and the Dornier of the Seychelles. It is this combination of his abilities that allows us to have a successful action”.
Brigadier General Cluzel shared that President Ramkalawan thanked them for this cooperation and the spirit of partnership that drives them. “We are like brothers in arms and he has hired us to develop these cooperation efforts even further and we are ready and an appointment has been made for the next Cateau Noir exercise in October and there will be other training and actions that will allow us to live up to our missions as a whole”.
As a reminder, the armed forces in the southern zone of the Indian Ocean (FAZSOI) guarantee the protection of the national territory and lead regional cooperation from Reunion and Mayotte. They constitute the main point of support of the “Indian Ocean” theater to fight against regional threats, such as piracy or illegal immigration, to ensure the surveillance of the exclusive economic zones associated with all the islands of the area of responsibility and maintaining a regional rapid response capability.
