Africa-Press – Seychelles. Estelle Alexis is the new chairperson of the Women in Logistics and Transport (WiLAT).
Ms Alexis, who succeeds Emile Mousbe, was appointed during a seminar organised on Thursday by WiLAT at the Seychelles Ports Authority (SPA).
WiLAT was launched in June 2013 to promote the logistics and transport industry to female members and to encourage and support their career development. WiLAT now has over 3200 members in 38 countries and is still growing.
Its mission is to promote the status of women in logistics and transport, to bring together those who aid the career development of women, and to provide a support network for women in the sector.
WiLAT has a vision of being the most sought-after organisation for advocacy and empowerment of women in the Logistics and Transport industry.
Its work toward this goal is concentrated in four key areas: Leadership, Mentorship, Entrepreneurship and Empowerment. Within these areas, WiLAT works to bring change to the industry and the wider economy.
It is also aware of its crucial role in society and its responsibilities not just to women but to the planet and to future generations.
WiLAT is at the forefront of change towards a greener, more equal and more socially responsible logistics and transport industry.
Ms Alexis holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law and a Master’s Degree in Maritime Law. She is currenty working at the SPA as the legal advisor.
“In the sector of logistics and transport, those roles have been traditionally associated to men even till today. Men are usually attributed to jobs like captain, pilot, taxi driver, etc…but now women are taking up the mantle of what we traditionally assumed is a man’s role. We are becoming more vocal and affirmative in our options and our rights and I love the fact that today or even tomorrow we have young girls that dream of being that pilot, the truck driver or the captain that would have been impossible in the past. A woman is definitely a mother but she can also be a mother and captain,” shared Ms Alexis.
The seminar was also attended by the Minister for Transport, Anthony Derjacques; Minister for Youth, Sports and Family, Marie-Celine Zialor; Minister for Investment, Entrepreneurship and Industry, Devika Vidot; PS for Civil Aviation, Ports and Marine, Alan Renaud; the chief executive (CEO) of SPA, Sonny Payet; deputy CEO Dr Egbert Moustache; WiLAT Global chairperson, Gayani De Alwis; and other members of WiLAT.
Both ministers Derjacques and Zialor and CEO Payet commended the ladies in the sector of logistics and transport and invited other women to join in.
