Africa-Press – Seychelles. The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, appealed, this Monday (7), in Sharm El-Sheik, Egypt, to rich countries, in particular, the United States of America and China, to take an ambitious position and credible capable of saving humanity from calamity.

Speaking at the 27th United Nations Conference on Climate Change, which runs until the 18th of this month, António Guterres said that Planet Earth is experiencing sudden changes in temperatures that could, in the medium and long term, cause irreparable vital and material damage, if countries rich do not act in a practical, joint, credible and urgent way.

Success in the fight against climate change, stressed the UN Secretary-General, depends mainly on the commitment and decision of rich countries, in particular the United States and China, none of which were present with their leaders (Joe Biden and Xi Jinping).

According to António Guterres, the two largest economies have a particular responsibility to transform ideas into fact. He said this is the only hope for reaching the targets on changes agreed at previous summits.

Humanity, said the Secretary-General, has a choice to make: cooperate to save or not cooperate to disappear from the earth’s surface, putting the world on a road and on the way to “climate hell”.

The African continent is the one that pollutes the least, he acknowledged, adding, however, that it is the one that suffers most from the consequences of climate change. Today’s world is increasingly insecure, with uncontrolled fires, floods, as well as waves of “climate migrants” risking their lives in search of safety.

The last eight years, said António Guterres, were considered, according to United Nations Meteorological Reports, the hottest, making each heat wave intense and life-threatening, especially in vulnerable populations.

COP27 will analyze loss and damage control policies, establishing a global carbon market and reinforcing the commitment to reduce the use of coal. The theme at COP27 will also be Agriculture, Biodiversity, Water, Science, Decarbonization and Energy.

In addition to the major topics to be debated at the summit, parallel events are also scheduled, on the sidelines of COP27, with the high-level indication. Today, the debate on Financing is scheduled, tomorrow Science and Thursday Decarbonization.

Also on the agenda are “Adaptation and Agriculture” (12), “Water Day” (14), “Energy Day” (15) and “Biodiversity” (16). The 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference was opened by the host, President Abdel Fatah al-Sissi. More than 120 Heads of State and Government, NGO leaders, environmental institutions, activists, community think tanks and companies participate.
