The Department of La Réunion, through its digital cultural service, the Iconothèque historique de l’Océan Indien (IHOI) has launched an innovative initiative proposing residencies for international artists devoted to the “Iconographic Heritage of the Indian Ocean” , thanks to the European structural funds of FEDER INTERREG V and the network of iconographers of the Indian Ocean.
Residences, traits of union between “creation” and “iconographic heritage”
These residences affirm the will of the Department – IHOI to support the emerging artistic creation of the Indian Ocean while offering it special conditions of expression, training and research.
They honor Indian Ocean heritage institutions and their funds, which constitute an original and fragile heritage.
An artist, a corpus of images, a territory, a month
From October 10 to November 10, 2022, the Iconothèque historique de l’Océan Indien will receive all applications by mail to the address: [email protected]. Only six artists from Réunion, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mayotte, Seychelles and Mozambique will be awarded a creative grant in order to highlight the collections available on the website of the Iconothèque historique de l’Océan Indien around two disciplines. ‒ visual arts and writing.
A jury composed of members of the project’s partner institutions will meet in mid-November in order to select the best performing artists in this creative, cultural and patrimonial approach.
The time of creation will last one month, between the month of December 2022 and that of April 2023. The works created by the resident artists will be the object of a virtual exhibition, which will shed light on the process of creation and value the approach artistic dance this globality.

The partners of the artistic and cultural collaboration project
This artistic initiative is the result of a partnership between the Réunion Department, the National Library of Madagascar, the Blue Penny Museum, the Franco-Mozambican Cultural Center, the Historical Archives of Mozambique, the Departmental Archives of Mayotte and the Seychelles National Archives.
These artists’ residencies are part of the collaborative project of Appropriation of the iconographic heritage of the Indian Ocean by the populations, carried out by the Iconothèque historique de l’Océan Indien (Department of La Réunion), co-financed by European Union (FEDER – INTERREG V OI) and supported by the Indian Ocean Commission (COI).
