Africa-Press – Seychelles. Citizens of Seychelles are being urged to uphold and protect the freedom of expression as guaranteed under our Constitution upon which our press freedom relies.
The call comes in a message from Chief Justice Rony Govinden on the occasion of the International Day of Democracy which was observed yesterday, September 15.
CJ Govinden’s message reads:
“Today (September 15) marks the International Day of Democracy. The theme chosen for this year is ‘Protecting Press Freedom For Democracy’.
“The United Nations secretary general has stressed that democracy cannot survive without free press and freedom of expression. The Judiciary strongly supports his statement and we take this opportunity to call upon the citizens of Seychelles to uphold and protect the freedom of expression as guaranteed under our Constitution upon which our press freedom relies. “Freedom of expression is important as it is through the free and unhindered capacity to express oneself that access to justice is possible, as justice is sought and delivered through human expressions.
“As far as the beneficiaries of this right are concerned they should exercise them with responsibility and with due regard to the rights and freedom of others given that this freedom is guaranteed with constitutionally permissible limitations.”
