Africa-Press – Seychelles. Twenty-four (24) artisans are showing their artistic talent through a craft exhibition entitled ‘Reviving Seychelles Crafts’ that opened yesterday at the Carrefour des Arts in Anvil and will run until Friday, August 4.

This exhibition was put together by the ‘Craft Steering’ committee in collaboration with the National Council for the Seychelles (NACC) and the official opening yesterday morning was made by the Secretary General for Culture, Heritage and Land, David Andre.

The participants also included students from the Institute of Technology (SIT) and the Institute of Art and Design (SIAD).

Mariette McKelvey, chairman of the ‘Crafts Steering’ committee, says that in everyone there is a creative light that allows them to create art that will bring joy and love.

“I want the young people who are here today to keep their light because they will take the leave with us later.”In his address, the executive director of NACC, Jimmy Savy, said that he is happy that such an activity has been organized to demonstrate that handicraft products have not yet disappeared. “We feel that there was a reduction in this form of land and there was fear that we would lose our local crafts. There are several factors that we discovered that we believe we need to come up with a program that will move us forward.”

The craft development project is organized for Seychellois youth to learn and understand the importance of creativity in the service of local products, and Emma Payet, a student from SIAD, says that she fully agrees.

“It is a privilege to take part in this activity. We had this sense to learn how to transform coconuts into the shape of an animal or a sea coconut plant.”

He says that under the supervision of the craftsman Florent Servina, they were able to use their bodies at the same time to create a beautiful product, but also to expand their knowledge of Seychelles crafts. Our selection of portraits shows some of the works in the exhibition.
