Africa-Press – Seychelles. The CRCO and the CRFIM maintain a deterrent presence in the waters of the South-West of the Indian Ocean
From December 14 to 19, the Regional Operational Coordination Center (CRCO) based in Seychelles, in partnership with the Regional Center for Maritime Information Fusion (CRFIM) based in Madagascar and the EUNAVFOR Atalanta mission, coordinated a new operation at sea baptized LEVANTE.
During this mission which covered the maritime areas of the Seychelles and Kenya, among others, 19 vessels of interest were identified by the CRFIM.
Vessels of interest are vessels that exhibit suspicious behavior that may lead to an investigation.
Based on the information received from the CRFIM that designated the fishing vessel Shin Shuen Far as a vessel of interest, the CRCO dispatched the Spanish frigate Santa Maria of the EUNAVFOR Atalanta mission to locate the vessel and verify its identity. The visiting team of the Spanish frigate was able to verify the documents of the ship as well as its cargoes which did not contain anything suspicious. For its part, the Seychelles coast guard vessel PS Etoile intercepted, for control, two fishing vessels in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of the Seychelles whose names are FV Zanmi and FV Great White. The verification of their document showed a legal fishing activity.
As an organizer of regular missions, the regional centers of maritime security register their activities as much in deterrence as in repression. The sea missions are organized within the framework of the regional maritime security architecture set up by the Indian Ocean Commission with funding from the European Union. Operation LEVANTE once again proves the will of the Member States of the MASE agreement to take charge of maritime security in the areas under their responsibility with the support of their partner EUNAVFOR Atalanta.
