Message from the Minister for Health on International Nurses Day today

Africa-Press – Seychelles. “Seychelles proudly commemorates International Nurses’ Day this year on May 12 at a time when the Ministry of Health, spurred by its own internal assessment which demonstrates significant room for quality care improvement and stimulated, also, by the innumerable appeals from the public to improve the quality of care, is doing its level best to be as responsive as possible to all health service users.

“Kudos to the many nurses, who put their patients first and who, every day, go further than the extra mile to show how much they really care.

“To the nurse at the health centre who is able to empathize with the patient and offer a glass of much needed water following a traumatic event; to the nurse at the hospital who gives the distraught relatives of a patient correct and reassuring information and asks them not to hesitate to request further information should they require; to the nurse working to formulate life-saving public health and health promotion policies from behind her computer – I offer my congratulations because you are all nurse-heroes.

Nurses have always been the rudder of the health care system. Your role is more important today than ever before.

“We are therefore equipping you with the skills you require to handle current and future challenges. Investment in your education, training and wellbeing is investment in a stronger healthcare system and in the wellbeing of our country. We cannot achieve the health targets of the Sustainable Goals without your active contribution and participation.

“I congratulate the nursing leadership and the nurses themselves for the extraordinary effort you are putting into nursing training and continuous professional development.

I commend the efforts of the nursing leadership to re-invigorate the fundamental values of this noble profession such as probity, personalised, patient-focused care, compassion and sensitive, non-judgmental communication inside the minds and hearts of all nurses.

“This year’s theme ‘Our nurses, Our future’ chosen by the International Council of Nurses calls on nurses, health leaders, policy makers and decision-makers to reflect on lessons learnt from the pandemic and translate these into actions for the future and ensure that nurses are protected, respected and valued. It is a call for investment in nursing. I salute all the nurses who have answered the call to a life of service. Your dedication and commitment to the cause is indeed a cause for celebration. We celebrate the difference you make in whatever you do, wherever you are. The government is determined to support further nursing progress in all areas. Now is the time for us to re-invent nursing. I am proud that we are all in this together. Happy Nurses Day to all!”
