Africa-Press – Seychelles. The Minister for Agriculture, Climate Change and Environment, Flavien Joubert, is representing President Wavel Ramkalawan at the United Nations Ocean Conference 2022 that is taking place in Lisbon, Portugal.

The June 27 – July 1 Ocean Conference is being held under the theme ‘Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development’.

The minister is being accompanied by the principal secretary in the Blue Economy department, Kenneth Racombo, as well as stakeholders from Seychelles in the Blue Economy space.

The Ocean Conference, co-hosted by the governments of Portugal and Kenya under the chairmanship of President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and President Uhuru Kenyatta, comes at a critical time as the world is seeking to address many of the deep-rooted problems of our societies laid bare by the Covid-19 pandemic and which will require major structural transformations and common shared solutions that are anchored in the SDGs.

To mobilise action, the conference will seek to propel much needed science-based innovative solutions aimed at starting a new chapter of global ocean action.

Given that President Ramkalawan is the champion for Blue Economy and Patron of the Ocean Decade, Seychelles will be leading and pronouncing in a number of side events discussing on ocean related matters such as the concept of Blue Economy, marine pollution, ocean action, the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ), the creation of Blue jobs and the special vulnerabilities of small island states.
