Africa-Press – Seychelles. The Mont Fleuri school, which has been adopted by the JA Enchanted Island Resort under the ‘Lospitalite’ project by the Tourism department, took part in their first activity this week, dubbed ‘Island Clean Up’, where students from the school cleaned parts of the Round Island, where the resort is located.
During the activity students had a great opportunity to provide a well needed service to the environment and the community, while simultaneously learning about recycling, reusing, and reducing waste.
They also learned that what people do on land can affect rivers and oceans, even without noticeable links.
They were divided into small groups for the beach clean-up.
After collecting as much debris as they could, the students separated the trash into different types of materials. They weighed each type and calculated what percentage they represented out of all the trash found on the island.
They then created a pie chart of the results, noted it in their logbook and wrote 10 ways in which they could help eliminate beach litter.
The information collected from the activity will be forwarded to JA Enchanted Island Resort for further actions.
The resort adopted the school as it wanted to get students to develop an interest in tourism.
The Lospitalite Tourism Club project is a programme where each Lospitalite Tourism Club, together with their adoptive business, comes up with a potential small scale tourism project, which can be developed in their respective community.
The accompanying photographs show some highlights of the beach clean-up.
