Africa-Press – Seychelles. The motion asks the government to conduct a study to review policies and strategies for doing business
The National Assembly has approved a motion that asks the government to conduct a deeper study that involves all the key economic sectors of Seychelles with the aim of reviewing policies and strategies that allow the private sector to remain sustainable and create more wealth and employment.
This motion was presented by the elected member of the Seychelles Democratic Union for the Grand Anse MaheĢ district, Honorable Waven William.
It was approved by 22 members of the Democratic Union of Seychelles who were present, no one voted against and 9 members of the opposition did not vote.
In this motion, the Honorable William said that Seychelles as a small country has many vulnerabilities, since its small population, the limitation of the land that can be developed for several projects such as agriculture or tourism, which is challenging, such as its existence with the markets for exporting , cool boats and planes, including taxes and insurance.
He also talked about the regional and global impacts on the country. He says that what they are emphasizing at the moment is “sustainable development”.
“Don’t just develop crazy but always follow a sustainable development model.” He says Seychelles needs to have more economic diversity when it comes to sustainability.
He says that this study to review national policies and strategies is to ensure that they “remain up-to-date with the dynamic reality of global development”.
He added that it will also give the government “real-time” information and to be able to make better informed and better calculated decisions “to continue to exist in operation to create wealth, allow the government to collect more taxes, keep workers in jobs, create new employment and even expand and diversify economic activities”, he said.
He also said that there is still work to do in the ‘ease of doing business’.
Among the questions he asked is whether the government as a facilitator is encouraging more participation and promoting consultation, whether there is a suitable legal framework and whether the policy is suitable to attract new businesses.
The members of the assembly who intervened spoke in favor of this motion, the impact that the covid-19 pandemic has on the country, and how certain, especially the small sectors, are seeing it difficult to be able to put them back on their feet. They emphasized the importance of creating an ideal environment to do business.
In his intervention, the member elected for Beau Vallon, the Honorable John Hoareau, proposed that the country explore measures that can cut down on imports, and expand the sale of local products, through business facilities for farmers for example. He even suggested that there is a ‘moratorium’ on the ‘retailers’.
Other points covered the development of the fish sector with a boat to Seychelles, and the development of local sectors such as cinnamon production.
Proportional member in the opposition, United Seychelles, Honorable Wallace Cosgrow, said that Seychelles needs an ideal environment that gives opportunities to do business in Seychelles.
He said that many businesses need to re-assist and re-adapt after covid-19.
“To stay in the market and be competitive in the market, they need to review their business courses,” he said. He talked about the challenges such as the price of electricity, transport, which is high and the business force to arrive at a competitive price to be able to continue operating.
Another problem that the members raised was the bureaucratic procedure to get approval, which delays and makes it difficult to start a business. Access to financing was also addressed.
In his conclusion, Honorable William congratulated the government for all the steps that have been taken so far to develop the country’s economic activities and asked the government to see the National Assembly with all its existing committees as a key partner that wants to work alongside them to be able to develop the country .
