Africa-Press – Seychelles. The National Bureau of Statistics has reported a rise in both police-generated cases, and reactive cases, during the second quarter of 2023 when compared to the preceding quarter.
According to the latest crime, justice, and security statistics, there has been a 9.9 percent increase in cases stemming from police activity. These cases originate from police surveillance efforts.
Specifically, there were 4,010 cases in the first quarter, and this figure surged to 4,407 cases in the second quarter.
Among the various crime categories, road traffic accidents are the dominant contributor, representing 72.1 percent, followed by public order offences at 15.6 percent. Drug-related offences make up 5.9 percent of the overall caseload.
Within the road traffic accident category, the primary offences involve parking offences, accounting for 31.2 percent, closely followed by failure to wear seat belts, at 29.5 percent.
As for public order offences, it has been noted that a significant proportion of cases stem from alcohol consumption in public places.
Furthermore, nearly 90 percent of drug-related cases are linked to possession of controlled substances.
Regarding police responses to public calls for help, which are categorised as reactive cases, there was a slight increase of 1.5 percent in comparison to the initial quarter.
According to the NBS, it has come to light that certain crime categories, namely, theft, offences against persons and burglaries, have been prominently contributing to these cases from the second quarter of 2022 through the second quarter of 2023.
Interestingly, more than a third of theft cases were related to incidents of stealing. When examining burglaries, out of the 198 cases recorded in the second quarter of 2023, 19 percent were documented at the Mont Fleuri police station.
With regards to legal tribunals, there has been a noticeable surge in activity. The employment tribunal witnessed a substantial 11.9 percent increase in cases during the second quarter compared to the first. However, it is also reported a decrease of 13.6 percent in the number of cases that were successfully concluded with judgments from the first quarter to the second quarter of 2023.
Turning our attention to the family tribunal, there was a significant uptick of 18.1 percent in registered applications related to Child Act cases during the second quarter.
Additionally, there was a noteworthy 6.6 percent increase in registered applications pertaining to family violence cases over the same period.
Shifting the focus to prison statistics, there was a remarkable 49.3 percent rise in the intake of remanded prisoners, from 69 to 103 remandees between the first and second quarters.
In contrast, for convicted prisoners, there was a decrease of 24.4 percent in the number of receptions into prison during the same timeframe. It is worth noting that the majority of both remandees and convicted prisoners fall within the age group of 28 to 37 years, representing nearly 40 percent for each category.
Records indicate that nine out of 10 remandees and convicted prisoners are male.
In the second quarter of 2023, more than one-third of all remanded prisoners were associated with theft-related cases. This trend has remained consistent from the second quarter of 2022, except for the second quarter of 2023 when theft was followed by drug-related cases.
On the other hand, in both the first and second quarters of 2023, a higher proportion of prisoners were convicted for crimes falling under the categories of theft and offences related to the administration of justice. In the second quarter of 2023, out of the 70 convicted prisoners, nearly half of them were convicted for theft and offenses related to the administration of justice, each accounting for 23 percent of convicted cases. In contrast, in the previous quarter, approximately one-eighth of prisoners were convicted for fraud-related offenses.
Administration of justice offences are a specific type of violation of the law, mostly committed when pre-trial conditions or sentences from a previous conviction are disobeyed. This includes failures such as not complying with conditions of release, not appearing in court, and disobeying a court order.
The data used in the compilation are from the police department, employment tribunal, family tribunal, probation services, prison department, and the Seychelles Revenue Commission (SRC).
