Africa-Press – Seychelles. Diving enthusiasts will be delighted to know that artefacts from the ship St Abbs which sunk near Farquhar in 1855 and Boudeuse which sank in the Amirantes have been put on permanent display in the National Museum of History.
These objects which include a wine bottle, copper nails, a coral -encrusted jar, amber beads and a Pewter mug were until now kept in the museum repository.
From the 16th to the 19th century, hundreds of ships sailed through our archipelago when Arab and European traders were engaged in the slave, spice and ivory trade. Their journeys were long and perilous and many of those ships came to an ill-fated end often with tragic loss of lives and precious cargoes. Artefacts salvaged from those wrecks are precious souvenirs of the maritime history of the IndianOcean. The National Museum of History is lucky to be the recipient of a few of those artefacts that remain a fascination among local and foreign visitors.
This new exhibit is part of the museum’s objective to improve its exhibition with new acquisition for the satisfaction of its visitors.
