Africa-Press – Seychelles. Ombudsman Nichole Tirant-Ghérardi yesterday presented a copy of her annual report for the year 2021 to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Roger Mancienne.
The theme of the report is ‘An institution in jeopardy’.
The handover of the report was made in the presence of the chairperson of the Media, Youth and Culture Committee, Hon. Wavel Woodcock, a member from the US Caucus Hon. Conrad Gabriel, the Clerk to the National Assembly, Tania Isaac and the deputy Clerk, Alexandria Faure.
Also present was Tracey Dine from the Office of the Ombudsman.
This act was done as part of the Ombudsman Constitutional duty and is stated in Article 143 (6) of the Constitution, which dictates that ‘The Ombudsman shall not later than the thirty-first January in each year make a general report to the National Assembly with a copy to the President on the exercise of the functions of the Ombudsman under this Constitution during the previous year.’
During the meeting, the Ombudsman stressed that there was a need to engage in more discussion on relevant issues concerning the Office with the National Assembly so as to raise more awareness of its role and give value to the Ombudsman’s office.
The Speaker, Hon. Woodcock and Hon. Gabriel thanked Mrs Tirant-Ghérardi for her work, for presenting this document to the National Assembly, and supported the need for further engagement with the Parliament on the role of the Office of the Ombudsman.
