Africa-Press – Seychelles. South Africa announced yesterday that it will press for the African Union (AU) to have a seat in the G20, whose leaders will meet next week in Indonesia.

A spokesman for the South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, explained, quoted by Agence France-Presse (AFP), that South Africa intends to help establish a framework that will lead to the AU joining the club of the richest countries.

“It is important that the collective voice of the continent is represented on this rostrum,” spokesman Vincent Magqenya said at a press conference.

“We sincerely hope that this proposal finds support and is promoted by the G20 member countries,” he added.

South Africa is currently the only African member of the G20. Senegalese President Macky Sall, who chairs the African Union, recently called for a review of international governance, calling for greater representation of Africans in international organizations such as the G20 or the UN Security Council.

In October, Sall said that multilateralism should “serve the interests of all”, otherwise it would expose itself to a “loss of legitimacy and authority”.

Macky Sall and Cyril Ramaphosa are expected to attend the G20 summit scheduled for next week, on the island of Bali, Indonesia.

ZIMBABWE JOIN THE COMMONWEALTH
Community assesses progress in the country

A team from the (Commonwealth), an international community that includes the United Kingdom and several former colonies, has been in Zimbabwe since yesterday, in order to assess the country’s application for membership. According to the BBC, the visit will last seven days, ending on the 18th of this month.

This is the team’s third visit to the country, which, in 2018, as part of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s international reintegration intentions, requested entry into the Commonwealth, from which Zimbabwe withdrew in 2003, at the time under the government of Robert Mugabe.

The mission led by the assistant secretary general, Luís Franceschi, will assess progress in implementing political and economic reforms. On Thursday, the British channel revealed, opposition MP Godfrey Sithole was released on bail after five months in prison without trial for allegedly inciting violence.
