Africa-Press – Seychelles. A prison officer has been suspended from duty after being found with a mobile telephone hidden on his person during a staff body search.
The incident occurred on Saturday April 9, 2022 at the Montagne Posée prison during the morning shift rotation.
An investigation has started and will determine if the prison officer was carrying the phone for someone else, if any payment had been received, if there was a conspiracy to commit other illegal acts and other violations.
“My end-of-year message for 2021 made it clear that I would be focusing on weeding out the bad apples and encouraging staff who are performing well. For 2022 we are doing just that,” Mr Raymond St Ange, commissioner of prisons, said following the incident.
The prison service at Montagne Posée will soon be in possession of a full body scanner which when installed will further bolster its operations.
The prison officer will not only face termination of employment but he may face court procedures for possible criminal conduct and other legal issues.
