Africa-Press – Seychelles. When the name Round Table Seychelles comes up, everyone thinks of Regatta. However this interesting association of professional young men do much more than just organise one of the most anticipated events in Seychelles.

After and even before the three-day fiesta is over these young men work even harder to make their chosen project become a reality, which has varied over the past 50 years.

This year Round Table Seychelles is celebrating its Golden Jubilee – 50 years existence. Looking back on its past projects, the Round Table has done a number of activities which varied from environmental projects such as the provision of drinking water fountain in public schools in 2016 and community projects such as giving back through donations and even the renovation of two houses at the Presidents’ Village in partnership with Soroptimist Club in 2019.

Seychelles NATION recently had a one on one chat with the Round Table Seychelles’ newly elected President, Alex Freminot, and the chairman, Andrew Palmyre.

“We make sure that our community is being taken care of because that is our goal,” said Mr Freminot.

Popular belief is that the annual Regatta is organised by a private organisation that benefits from the event but Mr Palmyre explained that this is not the case, as Round Table shares a great percentage of the profit collected to a main cause, which this year is going towards the redevelopment of the Regatta site.

The rest of the fund goes towards accommodations which makes Regatta possible as well as to cover administration fees.

“We understand why people may relate Round Table to just Regatta, as it is a well-known event and well-loved too. However, our association does so much more but as a sign of respect to the people we are supporting and donating to, we do not feel it is necessary to get media coverage. Maybe that is where people get the impression we are only about Regatta, as it is well publicised. But Round Table Seychelles is more than just Regatta.”

The group of dedicated young men meet twice a month to discuss the different potential projects and activities they can organise or participate in to help those in need. Since the pandemic, the Round Table had to discontinue many of its annual activities, but this year it is bringing them all back; these include participating in the clean up the world with its own “waste challenge” where it identifies an area to clean up for the day. In November it will observe an event to raise awareness for men’s mental health initiated by Round Table International and host the basketball tournament for orphans. Other than these activities, Round Table Seychelles is open to partnering with different organisations to work towards a specific or wide range of projects to make the communities better.
