Seychelles appoints Alain St Ange as Ambassador at Large

Africa-Press – Seychelles. Alain St Ange has been appointed as Ambassador-at-Large for Seychelles after getting a majority approval from the National Assembly on Wednesday.

St Ange, who was nominated by President Patrick Herminie, got 17 votes from the members of the United Seychelles (US) ruling party. Fourteen members of the Linyon Demoktraik Seselwa (LDS) voted against, and one member abstained.

In his presentation in the National Assembly, St Ange expressed gratitude to the President for his nomination, which he said was an invitation “to serve my country in a new role is a privilege and at the same time a new invitation to work for Seychelles, the country that has based my life and my career.”

St Ange said the appointment remains a testament to the belief that Seychelles depends on the collective strength of its people, regardless of political affiliation. He was a candidate for the 2020 and 2025 presidential elections.

“With a population of only 100,000, we will not be able to remain trapped in small groups of talent that are only close to us. Instead, Seychelles needs to look at experience and knowledge everywhere in our own country to ensure that Seychellois are ahead of foreigners and who can hold the bar to guide our future,” he said.

St Ange explained why his appointment makes sense and said, “My working life has been dedicated to the tourism industry, a sector that is not only the pillar of our economy but also the heart of our nation for the last 40 years. I have had the privilege of representing Seychelles on the international stage, creating the necessary relationships that have brought recognition to our country. These connections and working relationships have never been just for me; they are also for Seychelles.”

He sees his role not only as diplomatic but generational and is committed to transferring decades of wisdom, international networks, and leadership insights to emerging Seychellois talents.

“This role is an opportunity to ensure that the knowledge I have built over the years is not lost, but rather passed on to those who will shape the Seychelles of tomorrow,” said St Ange.

The new Ambassador-at-Large has been working in the tourism sector since 2009. Apart from working as the Chief Executive of the Seychelles Tourism Board, in 2012, when the regional organisation, the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands, was formed, he was appointed as the first president of the organisation.

The same year, St Ange became the Minister of Tourism and Culture, a post from which he resigned in December 2016 to pursue his candidacy as Secretary General of the World Tourism Organisation, but the post was awarded to Walter Mzembi, the Zimbabwean candidate.
