Africa-Press – Seychelles. The first edition booklet entitled the Seychelles Identity Passport was officially launched yesterday morning at the National History Museum.

The booklet launched by the Seychelles National Institute for Culture, Heritage and the Arts contains a wealth of information about Seychelles’ history, traditions and heritage.

The cultural identity of a nation is sacred, therefore it is important to continuously transmit its history, culture and heritage to the younger generation and the public as a whole.

In his opening speech, the secretary general of the Seychelles Institute of Culture, Heritage and the Arts, David Andre, talked about the significant occasion and the impact that it has on the Seychellois culture.

“This little book is an educative tool that will permit everybody, in an interactive fashion, to discover our creole identity as a Seychellois,” he said proudly.

He explained that the launch of the identity passport is a tool that will reinforce the national identity as well as a greater sense of belonging.

“Especially among the youth as future bearers of our constitution and traditions.” This work is the culmination of the efforts of several specialists such as historians, botanists, photographers, language specialists, graphic artists, translators and heritage professionals.

“We thank them all for their support and contribution towards consolidating our national identity,” Mr Andre said.

He thanked all the partners and stakeholders, as well as the Seychelles National Youth Council (SNYC) for their cooperation.

Yesterday’s event started with the flag-raising ceremony by two youths from the Scouts Association, Stanio Arrisol and Jazmine Simon, accompanied by Scout leader Marie-Helene Adrienne and the national anthem performed by a youth band.

The distinguished guests were then presented with a copy of the booklet by Mr Andre. Those who were presented with the booklet included First Lady Linda Ramkalawan; the Speaker of the National Assembly, Roger Mancienne; the Minister for Fisheries Jean-François Ferrari; Minister for Education, Dr Justin Valentin; the leader of government business in the National Assembly, Honourable Bernard George; and honorary ambassador for culture, Patrick Victor.

The representative of SNYC, Gerard Pierre, also received a copy of the book on behalf of Young Citizens and Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Mr Andre also gave a copy of the booklet to deputy Speaker of the National Youth Assembly, Dylan Freminot of Anse Boileau secondary school.

There were also representatives who received the booklet on behalf of their schools, both public and private.

After the ceremony, those who received their passport got their first visitor’s stamp from the National History Museum.

Members of the public can purchase a copy of the booklet at the National History Museum for R100.
