South African short film The Last Ranger makes Oscars 2025 shortlist

Africa-Press – Seychelles. The Last Ranger, a South African short film, has been shortlisted in the Best Live Action Short Film category at the 97th Academy Awards.

According to a press release, the film, directed by Cindy Lee, tells the story of rhino poaching and conservation efforts in South Africa.

It follows the journey of a teenager named Litha (Liyabona Mroqoza). Guided by the last remaining ranger, Khuseka (Avumile Qongqo), Litha is introduced to the world of a game reserve. Their adventure takes a dangerous turn when poachers ambush them. Amid the struggle to protect the rhinos, Litha uncovers a chilling secret.

The film will compete against 14 other entries when the nominations for the 97th Academy Awards are announced on Friday 17 January.

Lee said:

The National Film and Video Foundation wrote on X: “Congratulations to the talented team and crew of The Last Ranger for making it to the Oscars shortlist in the short film category! Your incredible storytelling and dedication continue to showcase the brilliance of South African cinema on the global stage.”

Since its release, the film has garnered numerous awards and accolades, including the Green Fire Award at the American Conservation Film Festival (ACFF) and Best Short Narrative at the San Diego International Film Festival.

On Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science announced the shortlists in 10 categories.

South Africa’s official submission for the International Feature Film category, Old Righteous Blues, did not make the shortlist.

The 2025 Oscars, hosted by Conan O’Brien will take place on 2 March.
