Africa-Press – Seychelles. The Public Utilities Corporation has successfully completed works on one of its undersea cables which transmits electric power from Praslin to La Digue.

The undersea cable which originally interconnected Praslin, Round Island and La Digue, was temporarily put out of service to facilitate direct interconnection between Praslin and La Digue via a newly installed length of cable from Praslin. The interconnection works were done with minimal interruption of electricity services due to the application of the stand-by generators on La Digue. The works were diligently undertaken over a period of three weeks and on occasions extended into the night. These works which involved cable terminations, cable jointing, testing and commissioning required a certain level of technical expertise which Public Utilities Corporation’s (PUC) in-house team have acquired with experience, thus allowing them to successfully deliver on the job.

The execution of this challenging endeavour which started on March 28, 2022, required meticulous planning and coordination as well as a significant amount of ground works involving designing, mapping, bathymetric surveys, consultations and countless hours of hard work. The cable, which now directly interconnects Eve Island (Praslin) to Dan Goulo (La Digue), was successfully put back in service on Friday April 15, 2022.

While PUC anticipates that the works done will considerably improve the reliability of electricity supply to the island of La Digue, it will continue to monitor the cable for signs of weakness. To further enhance the reliability of electricity services on La Digue, the installation of a third undersea cable is required.

The corporation would like to extend its gratitude to the residents and business operators on La Digue for their cooperation whilst the works were underway. PUC also wishes to thank its team for their tireless hard work and endurance throughout the works.
