Africa-Press – Seychelles. The Anti-Corruption Commission Seychelles and the United States of America will continue to stand side by side in the fight against corruption, commissioner May De Silva confirmed as she welcomed Richard Verma, the United States of America deputy secretary of state, and ambassador to the Republic of Seychelles, Ambassador Henry V. Jardine to the ACCS’s premises on Thursday June 1, 2023.

During the visit, deputy secretary of state Verma and ambassador Jardine were briefed on the ongoing work of the ACCS on prevention and education and the collaborative partnerships that have developed with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the department of justice (DoJ) and the office of the inspector general (OIG).

Commissioner De Silva commented: “It was an honour to welcome the most senior U.S diplomat to visit Seychelles for the last two decades to the ACCS and showcase the work that we as a nation are doing on education, prevention, detection and investigation of corruption, money laundering and related serious offences.

“We discussed how the United States has enabled us to develop many of our investigations and investigative techniques, trained and mentored our staff as well as offered further support to the ACCS and our law enforcement partners in the recovery of ill-gotten gains. We are extremely grateful to the United States for this ongoing and increasing support, helping us become a beacon of light shining on corrupt practices locally and regionally.”

Deputy secretary of state for management and resources Richard Verma said: “I have heard much about the work of the Anti-Corruption Commission Seychelles and it is wonderful to be able to visit the organisation to see the progress for myself. We are looking at innovative ways to assist the ACCS on the issue of corruption and money laundering, and bolster the support we have already provided in the form of anti-corruption experts, financial investigators and crime through joint working, mentoring and sustainable capacity building. As Ambassador Jardine said on his first visit to the ACCS in March of this year, this is only the start of our cooperation, and we hope to see even greater impact in the near future.”

The work of the ACCS and its partners seeks to enhance the lives, opportunities and future of every Seychellois by seeking to rid the country of corrupt public officials, both past and present and ensure that any stolen assets are rightfully returned to the country.

The Anti-Corruption Commission of Seychelles (ACCS) was established under the Anti-Corruption Act 2016 which gives it authority to investigate, detect and prevent corrupt practices. It is a self-governing, neutral and independent body which is not subject to the direction or control of any person or authority.
