World Bank trains LWMA staff on landfill gas management

Africa-Press – Seychelles. The World Bank last month held a targeted training session for staff of the Landscape and Waste Management Agency, focusing on landfill gas management as part of the Seychelles Solid Waste Management Project.

The workshop, conducted under Component 1 of the project, aimed to build technical capacity within Seychelles’ waste management sector. It addressed key areas such as the generation, capture, utilisation, and safe destruction of landfill gases – critical topics in reducing environmental harm and enhancing operational safety.

“This training equips our team with essential knowledge to improve landfill operations and align with global best practices,” said an official of the Landscape and Waste Management Agency (LWMA).

The session is the latest in a series of technical workshops. On December 12, 2024, the World Bank hosted an introductory training on landfill management led by Dr Ali Abedini, a landfill gas expert. This was followed by a two-day session in January 2025, where Dr Abedini and landfill operations specialist Dr Tony Sperling trained 24 participants – including representatives from the Seychelles Fire and Rescue Services Agency, the department of Environment, DRMD, SAA, and 10 LWMA staff – on landfill fire prevention, operational practices, and equipment handling. All participants received certificates of participation.

LWMA has expressed its intention to continue working closely with the World Bank to advance sustainable waste management across the country.
