Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Police in Makeni have come under scrutiny for allegedly disobeying warrant orders issued by Magistrate Yusif Kamara related to a serious criminal case involving defendants from Konta village.
The defendants have repeatedly failed to appear in court, raising concerns among residents of Mankneh village, who are seeking justice for alleged attacks on their community.
Reports indicate that in mid-January 2025, residents of Konta village attacked Mankneh village at night, resulting in significant damage to homes and property. Mankneh, located approximately 20 kilometers from Makeni city, has recently experienced considerable development, largely attributed to the efforts of Dr. Roland Turay, a local resident who has spent much of his life working for the United Nations abroad. His initiatives include the construction of primary and secondary schools, a health center, roads, bridges, and community facilities such as a mosque and a church.
However, these advancements appear to have incited tension with the Konta community, which has allegedly orchestrated attacks against Mankneh. The most recent incident, reportedly led by Paramount Chief-elect Daniel Raymond Kamara, also known as PC Othoraneh, resulted in the destruction of many facilities developed by Dr. Turay.
In response to the attacks, Mankneh residents filed a complaint with the Mena Hills Police station. Unfortunately, they report that no significant action was taken by law enforcement. Subsequently, the complainants from Mankneh initiated legal proceedings against 13 individuals from Konta village, including the Paramount Chief-elect, at the Magistrate court.
During two court sessions, the Konta defendants did not appear, prompting Magistrate Kamara to issue warrants for their arrest. However, police reportedly failed to execute these orders. Magistrate Kamara expressed frustration, stating that while he can issue warrants, the execution of arrests is solely within the police’s jurisdiction.
“Since the warrant was issued nearly a month ago, the police have not arrested a single member of the offenders,” said a spokesperson for the Mankneh community. This inaction has left the plaintiffs feeling powerless and concerned about their safety and the integrity of the legal process.
