Statistics Sierra Leone Launches Cartographic Training

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Statistics Sierra Leone (Stats SL) has commenced a seven-day training program for 50 staff members from its Data Science and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) divisions.

The training, held at Hotel 5/10, aims to equip participants with essential skills for the upcoming pilot cartographic mapping exercise, a key step in preparing for the 2026 Decennial Population and Housing Census.

During the launch, Mr. Moses Williams, Chairman of the Stats SL Council, urged trainees to remain focused, emphasizing the exercise’s importance. “The pilot cartographic mapping will form the foundation for the main exercise,” he said. “Its outcomes will guide decisions on personnel recruitment, mapping tools, and resource allocation.”

Mr. Abdulai Salia Brima, Director of Censuses and GIS and National Coordinator for the 2026 Census, stated that the training will enhance participants’ proficiency in modern GIS tools, including ArcGIS Pro, GeoAPP/EAPAD, and satellite imagery.

Statistician-General and Chief Census Officer, Mr. Andrew Bob Johnny, reaffirmed Stats SL’s commitment to an inclusive and transparent census. “This census is about the people. We will ensure no one is left behind—even if it means pleading for participation,” he said. He described the training as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” for professional growth and national contribution.

The program is facilitated by Dr. Foluke Adebayo, a UNFPA-hired cartographic consultant, who brings extensive technical expertise.

The pilot mapping exercise will test tools, personnel, and methodologies in real-world conditions, assessing readiness and identifying challenges ahead of the nationwide operation.
