HRCSL Launches Nationwide Mpox Hospital Monitoring

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL), through its Directorate of Monitoring and Research, has launched a nationwide monitoring exercise across hospitals in Freetown and regional areas to assess the treatment and prevention measures for Mpox.

When HRCSL visited the Kingtom Police Hospital, the team learned that the facility had admitted its first Mpox case on 5 February 2025 and had since treated 406 cases.

Additionally, the hospital operates a dedicated 22-bed Mpox unit, with 14 patients (9 male, 5 female) currently admitted.

Furthermore, Connaught Teaching Hospital caters to severe cases and has recorded 50 cases so far. Its Infectious Diseases Unit (IDU), with a 12-bed capacity, has documented 14 deaths and 16 recoveries since 14 April 2025.

At the Police Training School (PTS) Mpox Treatment Centre in Hastings, 228 cases have been reported (122 male, 106 female) since 18 May 2025. The centre has successfully treated and discharged 135 patients, with no deaths recorded.

Meanwhile, the China Friendship Hospital at Jui now serves as a holding centre, referring all Mpox cases to the PTS Treatment Centre.

Finally, from the lessons learned from these visits, the HRCSL monitoring aims to ensure that public health measures align with human rights standards during the ongoing Mpox response.
