ECSL Hosts National Consultations on Electoral System

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) has convened a national consultation on the preferred electoral system for the upcoming elections, held at the New Brookfields Hotel in Freetown.

The event, attended by Chief Electoral Commissioner Mr. Mohamed Kenewui Konneh, fellow commissioners, and senior management, aimed to address the recommendations of the Tripartite Committee regarding electoral reforms.

The consultation included key democratic partners such as the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Emmanuel Gaima, representatives from the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC), the Sierra Leone Police, the Office of National Security (ONS), the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa (CHRDI), various Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and other distinguished personalities.

Dr. Emmanuel Gaima, who participated in the initial tripartite discussions, emphasized that the committee did not reach a consensus on the electoral system, necessitating public dialogue. He stated, “Any discussion should be focused on the public and in the interest of the citizens,” urging the ECSL to take the lead in facilitating the dialogue.

The Attorney General outlined the framework for the discussions, stressing the importance of a national conversation that includes all regions and sectors of society. “This dialogue must not only take place in Freetown but across the entire country,” he said.

Mr. Ngolo Katta, Coordinator for the Tripartite Steering Committee, provided insight into the multi-sectoral and inclusive stages of the dialogue process. He highlighted that a comprehensive report would be submitted to the Attorney General regarding necessary legislative reviews following the consultations.

During the session, Chief Electoral Commissioner Mr. Mohamed Kenewui Konneh presented the Proportional Representation System, noting its potential benefits for peace, security, financial stability, and national cohesion.
